Children in the Garden Day

Seedling Adventures Community Garden hosted a ‘children in the garden day’ on June 2, 2015. The Heartland Health Region’s Public Health Nutritionist partnered with the Rosetown Regional Family and Community Support Services and Walter Aseltine School to offer the Grade 1 class an indoor and outdoor gardening session. The partnership works to offer learning opportunities for children, support the teachers with health education, encourage a lifestyle that includes both healthy eating and physical activity and allow children to visit and experience places and spaces in their community.

The children started a couple of months ago by seeding pumpkin and squash seeds in the classroom. June 2 began with the children walking the Rose Trail directed by their teacher, Carly Gilchrist. The children learned a bit about plant growth while planting their pumpkins and an assortment of seeds, potatoes and flowers with help from local farmer, Frieda Paquette. Frieda also brought samples of durum, canola, lentils and wheat to show the children how some of the foods they ate started. The children had an opportunity to tour the Rosetown and District Museum as well as the Tea House and spend some time playing with a variety of equipment such as nerf balls and a life sized snakes and ladders game (with a giant dice). The day also included a snack and lunch while chatting with the region’s Nutritionist and a nutrition student who is working to become a registered dietitian. A great day was had by all!

Thank you to Carly and Frieda as well as Jackie Krchov, Lexie Schiller, Janelle Minish, Bob White and the other school, parent and museum volunteers for making a memorable day for the Grade 1 class.
