Heartland First Responder Program
First Responders are a vital component of the Emergency Medical Services team. To ensure that this vital resource remains available to residents, the Heartland Health Region provides a minimum of two First Responder Courses each year.
The role of the First Responder is to work with ambulance services to provide emergency care. They ensure the EMS system has been activated, gain safe access to the patient, assess the patient’s condition and provide emergency treatment until the ambulance arrives. In rural Saskatchewan First Responders reduce the time that patients wait for initial care in the EMS system.
The First Responder program consists of 48 hours of classroom instruction that includes CPR, AED training, lectures and hands-on practical training using medical equipment. The training modules covered include anatomy, patient assessment, oxygen therapy, and medical and trauma emergencies to name a few.
